More then a Thirty years old, and showing no signs of aging, the Nautilus range of sports watches from Patek Philippe is looking better than ever.

Patek Philippe's Nautilus collection was first launched in 1976, at a time when the Swiss luxury watch brand was looking for a strong design with casual elegance. The designer the firm turned to was none other than the quirky Gérald Genta, who had already created a success story with the Royal Oak at Audemars Piguet in 1972. In designing the Nautilus, Genta and Patek looked to one of the most evocative inspirations for sport watches around, the maritime vessel. In particular, they found the shape of the porthole found in such craft to be the perfect design cue for their new model.

The original Nautilus was launched as the Ref. 3700/1 in steel, which was something of a coup since almost all luxury watches of its day were slim, and made of de rigeur gold. The Nautilus, however, with its large, uniquely-shaped monocoque case, was bold, durable, and a distinct break from the norm – a calculated move that set the standard for a new trend in haute horlogerie. Since then, the Nautilus range has established itself as a classic of its time, and is now very collectible.

To celebrate thirty years of this handsome design, the company has revealed its new Nautilus lineup, which showcases a very contemporary interpretation of this timeless collection. Subtle changes have brought it into the 21st Century, whilst preserving its original spirit.
